Bottom line The best systems right now are Tesla Autopilot, Ford BlueCruise, and GM Super Cruise. They differ in where they work and how hands-on they let you be — but all three meaningfully reduce highway fatigue.

Adaptive cruise control and lane centering have quietly transformed highway driving. A good system holds speed, follows traffic, and keeps you centered in your lane, taking the grind out of long trips. The catch: you must stay alert and ready to take over. This is Level 2 automation — see our levels explainer.

Tesla Autopilot

Autopilot is the most widely experienced Level 2 system, and it's impressively smooth on the highway. It's standard equipment on every Tesla, which gives it unmatched reach. (Note: it's distinct from the optional "Full Self-Driving" package, which we cover in Tesla FSD vs Waymo.)

GM Super Cruise

Super Cruise was among the first true hands-free highway systems, using detailed map data to allow hands-off driving on approved roads while a camera confirms you're watching the road. It's limited to mapped highways but is genuinely relaxing where it works.

Ford BlueCruise

BlueCruise is Ford's answer to Super Cruise — hands-free on pre-mapped divided highways, with similar driver-monitoring. It's a real asset on long road trips and increasingly available across Ford's lineup.

What to look for

  • Where does it work? Hands-free systems are limited to specific mapped roads.
  • How does it monitor you? Camera-based monitoring is safer than simple steering-wheel sensors.
  • Is it standard or a subscription? Some systems carry ongoing fees.
Stay engaged Even the best system is Level 2 — you remain responsible. Keep your eyes on the road and hands near the wheel. Read self-driving safety: the facts before you lean on any system too hard.

The verdict

For most buyers, Autopilot (standard on Teslas) or a hands-free system like Super Cruise or BlueCruise is the difference between a draining drive and a relaxing one. Choose based on the roads you drive most — and remember that none of these replaces an attentive driver.
